Understanding the ALARM Method

Going through a personal challenge can be an overwhelming and emotional experience that can leave you feeling lost and uncertain. However, with the right mindset and support, you can navigate this challenging time and become stronger on the other side. It's essential to prioritize your emotional health during this transformative process, and that's where the ALARM Method comes in. Jennie named her approach after the concept of alarms. She explains that when we decide to do something different, like going for a run, an alarm goes off in our minds. However, sometimes, we hit the snooze button and failed to follow through on our decision. This internal glitch can prevent us from achieving our goals and living our best lives. Individuals can embark on selfdiscovery and healing through the ALARM Method by interpreting and responding to these alarms.

The Five Steps of the ALARM Method

AWARENESS: Identifying the emotion causing self-sabotage In a recent interview on the Kim Talks Resilience podcast, Jennie shares her insights on the importance of the ALARM Method's first step, Awareness. Using procrastination as an example, she explains how identifying the feeling underneath the behaviour can help individuals gain insight into why they show up in a certain way and begin to identify the root cause of their self-sabotage. Jennie believes that many people are unaware of their emotions and how they influence their behavior. Awareness is a crucial step in the ALARM Method and in overcoming self-sabotage. By becoming aware of their feelings, individuals can start taking control of their behavior and move towards emotional freedom. According to Jennie, it's essential to ask oneself what feeling they are experiencing when they procrastinate. Is it guilt, anger, nervousness, or something else? Once individuals become aware of the underlying feeling, they can overcome self-sabotage and move towards positive change.

LOCATION: Noticing where in the body the emotion is felt Jennie discussed the importance of location when it comes to processing emotions. According to Jennie, emotions are often felt in our physical bodies, yet many of us are not taught to recognize and locate these sensations. We can better understand ourselves and our behaviors by noticing where we feel certain emotions in our bodies. For example, if we feel anxious about paying a bill and locate that sensation in our stomach, we can explore why we feel this way and take steps to address the underlying issue. Jennie emphasizes the value of this approach in promoting emotional selfawareness and facilitating personal growth.

ASK THE QUESTION: Reflecting on when the emotion was first felt Jennie's message about recognizing and processing emotions through the power of location is relevant to reflect on when the emotion was first felt. We can identify patterns and triggers instrumental to our emotional experiences by asking ourselves when we have felt a particular emotion before. As Jennie emphasized, emotions are often felt in our physical bodies, and love this journal! It pairs so nicely with the Self Sabotage No More book! The journal makes it so much easier to implement the techniques taught in the book, plus provides so much more content & value! Jennie has an amazing gift of teaching things in a way that can be easily understood and applied in our daily lives. Who wouldn’t want to release sabotaging thoughts & emotions and reset?!?! Also, I love journaling, so this is perfect for me, but the prompts also make it easy to use for a non-journaler! Highly recommended! noticing where we feel them can be a significant tool for self-reflection. By recognizing the physical sensations associated with different emotions, we can identify patterns and triggers contributing to our emotional experiences.

RELEASE: Welcoming and releasing the emotion from the body Jennie offers powerful insights into releasing emotions from the body through welcoming and unpacking techniques. According to Jennie, the simplest way to release emotions is to welcome them by noticing their location in the body and relaxing in that area. By holding their arms open as if they're welcoming the emotion, they allow it to leave instead of resisting it.

Jenny also shared her unpacking technique, which involves shoulderto-wrist movements that help release emotions from the body. By doing this motion a few times and repeating a mantra, such as "releasing anxiety," individuals can effectively clear the emotion out of their bodies. While Jennie acknowledges that there is science behind these techniques, she emphasizes that they work and can be powerful tools for emotional release.

MANTRA: Replacing the released emotion with a positive affirmation

In the last step, Jennie shared insights on using positive affirmations as mantras to replace negative emotions. After releasing an emotion through welcoming and unpacking techniques, Jennie suggests replacing it with a positive affirmation to enhance one's emotional state further.

When asked about the emotion a person would like to feel, Jennie encourages using a positive affirmation as a mantra. Individuals can shift their mindset and achieve their desired emotional state by focusing on the positive feeling they want to cultivate.

Jennie reminds us that resetting and releasing negative emotions is never too late. While parents may feel pressure to embed positive values and beliefs in their children during their formative years, individuals can always make changes and grow. By using positive affirmations as mantras, individuals can help nurture a more positive mindset and lead a more fulfilling life.
